Last June, I had Covid, and wrote about my experiences with it, and our cat Topsy. Well now my wife has it, and keeping Topsy away from her, has become an even more difficult task.
So both my wife and I are wondering if having Covid is still dangerous to cats, and if so what should we do to keep them safe? Now we have two cats, but Topsy is the only problem. Vernon stays with his dad, who is negative at the moment, and staying away from mom.
According to the CDC, pets can get Covid from humans, but the risk of them transmitting it to a human is very low. They said transmission from a human to a pet accords during close contact.
What is close contact? Petting, snuggling, kissing, licking, sharing food, and sleeping in the same bed. The CDC says the best thing to do, is not only isolate yourself from your love ones, but your pets too.
What I did back in June, was a perfect example of what should be done. I stayed in a closed room by myself, and only came out to eat. My wife, on the other hand has chosen to sleep on the couch, and expose Topsy.
Topsy will not leave her side, while she sleeps on the couch, and Vernon and I are confined to the bedroom. She has given both cats lysine, which is good to prevent sickness in cats
It's important to know pets infected with Covid, may or may not get sick. Of those that have gotten sick, most have been mild cases. Serious illnesses in cats have been very rare.
