Years ago the car maker Mazda came up with a slogan "Zoom Zoom," to let the general public know there cars were fast. Well did you know there is a term cat owners/experts use when describing their cats crazy behavior.
I'll give you a hint, it starts with "Zoom," drum role please, it is Zoomies. Most cat owners may recognize the term, although I only just heard of the term a few months ago, and I have been around cats for years.
The first two cats I had ever been around for extended time, was our Philly, who is awaiting us at Rainbow Bridge, and our girl Topsy. Both Phil and Topsy I had seen act a little crazy at times, and just figured they needed to get a little energy out.
I was right, part of having the Zoomies is to let out excess energy, but like I said I didn't know that until a few months ago. Our new cat Vernon is full of energy, and will go through Zoomies much more often than Philly did, and Topsy does.
It was Vernon's behavior that made me stumble on the term Zoomies. I was wondering why he was always acting crazy lol. Now lets dive into the term Zoomies a little more.
Did you know there is a scientific term for Zoomies, and it is Frenetic Random Activity Periods or FRAP for short. It is what it sounds like, just short random periods of excitement.
So the number one cause of Zoomies is built up energy as I mentioned earlier. All cats go through it, but it is more frequent in younger cats, which explains why Vernon has it more often.
This may happen after a long nap, or in the case of Vernon the day after a lazy day. Purrfect example, yesterday Vernon slept most of the day, so this morning he was full of energy running around like a crazy.
Have you ever caught your cat racing out of the litter box, well that is the Zoomies in full effect. In our case, the litter boxes are in the basement, so on occasion we'll catch both cats racing up the stairs. That is simply the cat padding itself on the back for doing a great job.
If Zoomies are too much for you to handle, one way to reduce the frequency of them is to play with your cat more often. In our case Vernon might playfully attack Topsy during a Zoomies episode, so I usually divert him with his favorite toy.
If you would like to simply sort of schedule when a cat goes through the Zoomies. They may go through them after being fed, so if you don't want a crazy cat at night, don't feed it.
Zoomies are normal behavior, but if your cat normally never had the Zoomies often, and now is. It may be a sign to have them checked out with a vet. There are underlining conditions that cause this, or it can be a simple as it has fleas or something, that is making it uncomfortable.
Well if you didn't already know about the Zoomies, I hope this post was not only entertaining, but informative too.
