Many people are not willing to adopt a cat, because of their stereotype of being un-affectionate independent animals. The truth is, if you know how to educate them, especially at a young age. You can have yourself an affectionate cat. Below, we will share some practical and useful advice to achieve this goal.
Tips to make your cat affectionate
There are many ways to get your cat to be affectionate. Like people there behavior can be influenced through training and education. So it all depends on the training that is given.
Write down these tips:
1. Choose your breed well
Breeding is what most determines feline behavior. That is why before adopting a cat, you should do someone research, and find out which breeds are most affectionate.
For example, breeds like Maine Coon, Ragdoll, and Persian are more affectionate compared to others. You have to choose the cat breed that best suits you.
2. Give it time
When you bring a new pet into the home, give it time to adjust. Especially if it is a kitten. The younger the cat, the more scared it will be, when introduced to a new environment.
My brother recently brought home kittens, and the immediately found places to hide. It took the days if not a week or more to adjust. If not handled in the right way, these are the moments that can hurt you. Yelling will not get you anywhere.
Speak softly in a sweet voice. Do not force the kitten out of hiding. Make sure you let it know, there isn't anything to fear out in the open, and that you are a source of protection.
Once the kitten is out, let it sniff you before you attempt to touch it. Sudden movements may result in it finding a hiding spot again.
3. Give it a name
Naming your cat or kitten is important, and repeat it as often as possible, especially in pleasant situations. Avoid using it's name in a negative way, if so the cat will see it that way.
Be patient, unlike dogs cats don't learn their name right away. This process can take a month or longer. Trust me they will learn it, our cat Vernon comes to me every time I call him.
4. Play with it
Playing is the best way to get a cat's affection. Spend time with it. When we first got Vernon, once he warmed up to me. I made sure to start playing with him, and now he won't leave my side.
Vernon likes to play with almost anything, balls, feathers, plush toys, string. If you don't have any cat toys, find something your cat likes and spend time with it.
The more time you spend with your cat, the closer your bond with it will be.
5. Get their attention
Dogs can't get enough of your attention, but cats are very independent, and for the most part will only go to you when it wants attention. So you need to persuade it on occasion.
Pick it up, play with it's paws, pet your cat. Give it all the attention you can. This is very important, cause with out this your kitten will not be affectionate, and grow up to be selfish and cold.
6. Never hit him
Last put not least, we just talked about being affectionate towards your cat, please do not do the opposite. Punishing or hitting your cat will not make it a better animal.
Cats need positive reinforcement, when teaching it right from wrong. Practicing this at a young age will make it come easier. Cats are a bit spiteful, so if you hit it, the cat might not forget and treat you the same. Practice positive reinforcement with treats or other types of rewards, and you'll soon notice results.
You'll find getting your cat to be affectionate isn't so difficult as it may seem.
