A few months ago, I wrote about fountains and cats that like to drink from the faucet. Specifically because our Vernon is one of them. Well it turns out fountains can help cat owners with that issue, but why would a cat drink from the faucet in the first place.
Cats have a natural instinct to seek out running water, and many cats prefer to drink from a faucet rather than a bowl. This behavior can be confusing for some cat owners, but there are several reasons why cats prefer to drink from a faucet.
First, cats are naturally curious animals and are attracted to the movement and sound of running water. This is because in the wild, running water is typically cleaner and fresher than still water.
In fact, cats are known to be very picky about the water they drink, which is why they may avoid drinking from a bowl that has been sitting out for a while.
This actually makes sense, after learning this, I observed Vernon, and even with the fountain water, if he doesn't hear it, he thinks it is no good. I have to put his nose up to it for him to drink sometimes.
Second, drinking from a faucet can also be a way for cats to assert their independence. Cats are solitary animals and may prefer to drink alone, away from other pets or people.
A faucet allows them to have their own personal water source, away from the noise and activity of the household. Vernon has his own fountain, while our other cat drinks from a bowl.
Yes that is Vernon above drinking from our other cat's bowl. I was just about to replace the water, when that happened. So I guess he thought that water was clean enough to drink.
Third, cats may have a medical condition that affects their sense of thirst. Cats are prone to a number of kidney and urinary tract disorders, which can make it difficult for them to drink enough water.
Drinking from a faucet can help cats with these conditions stay hydrated, as the sound and movement of running water can stimulate their thirst. I don't believe Vernon fits under this, but if you believe your cat does please contact a vet.
In conclusion, cats' preference for drinking from faucets is a natural behavior. It is driven by their attraction to the sound and movement of running water, their need for independence, and sometimes by medical condition.
If your cat is drinking from the faucet, it's important to make sure they have access to fresh water at all times, and to monitor their water intake to ensure they are staying hydrated.
