This morning, as I watched Verny and Alfie zoom through the hallway in a blur of fur and energy, this topic came to mind. So many friends and family members who own a cat have told me, “Oh, I could never have another—my cat just wouldn’t allow it.”
Well today, I want to share why introducing another cat to your home might be more important than you think.
I’ve personally been around cats since I met my wife over five years ago. She’s been a lifelong cat lover—fostering and caring for them long before I came into the picture. When we met, she already had two cats: Philly and Topsy.
Philly was a big orange guy with a tough-guy persona (my wife always said he was just misunderstood). Topsy, on the other paw, was a cuddle bug through and through.
For the most part, they kept their distance—until Topsy would cry out and I’d rush to her defense. My wife knew better, though. She’d laugh and say Topsy was usually the one pushing Philly’s buttons until he’d had enough.
On the surface, they seemed like an odd couple, maybe even indifferent to each other. But when we lost Philly in May 2022, it became clear how deeply connected they actually were. Topsy felt the loss as much as we did.
By late June, nearly two months had passed. We weren’t thinking about adding another cat just yet, but that sense of emptiness lingered. Topsy seemed especially down—quiet, withdrawn, and visibly sad when left alone.
That’s when my wife suggested we foster again—something she hadn’t done since 2020. Enter Verny.
He’d just arrived at the shelter, in rough shape and nowhere near ready for adoption. The shelter staff said he was a quiet, lovable boy. Spoiler alert: they lied.
😂 Verny had lungs. He made it loud and clear that he hated being alone in the foster room.
Topsy met him on day one, and things seemed okay—until a sudden post-car-ride belly incident led to the loudest cat noise I’ve ever heard… and an equally dramatic reaction from Topsy.
Let's just say, first impressions were... memorable.
We quickly realized they needed a slow intro. But over time, something beautiful happened—Topsy warmed up to him. By the time we were ready to make things official, Verny was already a part of our family.
