If you haven't met Verny yet, that is him starring in his latest video above ☝. He was napping on my lap, when his mother started recording, and woke him up with the slightest sound.
The video above☝ is the inspiration for this blog post. Today we will be discussing cats ears, more importantly why are they so sensitive to the slightest sound.
Do cats have sensitive ears? I think the video above☝ answers that question with a loud YES. So why are cats ears so sensitive? Like most characteristics of cats, it helps with hunting and protection.
Believe or not our cute cats are natural predators. Their hearing helps them detect the slightest movement of potential prey. This greatly enhances their hunting abilities.
This can also benefit them, if they are the prey. Their enhanced hearing can lead to the early detection of approaching predators. This allows them to effectively plan an escape increasing their chances of avoiding harm.
We just discussed the two most important reasons, why cats have sensitive ears. Below lets talk about other reasons for this important characteristic.
Would you believe their ears help them communicate? These sensitive ears help them pick up on subtle sounds like high pitched meows or low warning growls. This aids in social interactions that can help in navigating their environment.
These sensitive ears greatly help them at night. Cats are nocturnal animals, and these ears help them navigate low-light conditions when their vision may be limited.
Cats are also territorial animals, so the ability to identify sounds early within their territory is crucial. This helps in maintaining control over their domain. Pinpointing sounds early also help them to monitor changes in their environment.
Like the video above☝ said, " this cat is always on High Alert." Cats sensitive ears keep them always alert and vigilant. They are constantly in a state of readiness.
So next time you see your cat suddenly wake up from a nap like our boy Verny did in the above☝ video you'll know why. I hope you enjoyed this post, come back soon to see what I post about next!
