Cats do many things that make us humans think 🤔 One of those things is stretching, like our boy Philly above. So why do cats do this, well you are about to find out. The answers may come as a surprise.
If there was an Olympic event for stretching, cats would win gold. They are constantly stretching their muscles, likely for many of the same reasons people are, experts say. So what is that reason?
The main reasons, It feels good and increases blood flow. Cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day, about twice as much as people. All this sleeping, of course, they need to stretch a lot when they are awake.
When humans sleep, the brain paralyzes most of the body's muscles to prevent people from acting out their dreams. The same thing happens with cats during naps, which prevents the cat from getting off the couch or wherever it's napping.
Once a cat wakes up, the process of stretching begins. They do this to move their muscles, after a period of inactivity, whether they are sitting or sleeping.
When a cat sleeps or is relaxed, its blood pressure drops, just like us humans. Stretching helps to reverse this. So the next time you see your cat do this, give it a thumbs up 👍
As you stretch, it activates all your muscles and increases blood pressure, which increases the amount of blood flowing to your muscles and also to your brain. It helps wake you up and make you more alert.
As muscles begin to move with each stretch, they also remove toxins and waste, which build up during periods of inactivity (naps).
For example carbon dioxide and lactic acid can build up, as you stretch blood flow and lymph circulation increases, which help remove these toxins.
The stretching also prepares muscles for activity. So your cat will be ready for anything that comes its way from swinging strings to bouncing balls.
