My Topsy likes to look out the window, and chat with the wildlife. Most animals get her attention, but it's the birds that she likes to chat with. My fiance and I think it is the adorable thing, but is it?
I recently came across an article that actually makes sense. We think our cats are so innocent, and that chattering is something cute that they do. If you don't know already, it's actually the total opposite.
Cats actually chatter, when they see prey that they can't reach. Yes, that's what I said "prey", so if that window wasn't in between our Topsy and the birds she was chattering with, we be seeing a whole didn't side of our Topsy girl.
Now my fiance thinks that Topsy wouldn't know what to do, but she was a rescue, and was found at a very young age out on the streets. So I think, if we gave her the opportunity, she would attempt to catch those birds, although when confronted with insects in the house, she does nothing. So who knows what would happen?
The chattering isn't to lure their prey, but basically it can be one of two things. It can be interpreted as a sound of excitement, which I think it is with our Topsy. Or can be a sound of frustration, that they are trapped inside and can't act on there animal instincts.
There is actually one other interpretation, which also makes sense. The chattering can be a response to wanting to clasp their jaws on the prey. Basically the cat is saying, if this window wasn't between us, I would be having you for dinner.
For the full article click here. Nowadays there aren't many outdoor cats around where I live, but I remember my cousin as kids mentioning how his cat would bring home dead birds etc, as gifts.
First of all, do any of you have cats that chatter out the window? Did any of you know this is the reason for that chattering? If you have ever had an outdoor cat, did it ever bring home dead animals?
If you answered yes to any of those questions leave a comment below, and share your story. I would love to hear it. I know this isn't the usual blog content I share on this site, usually I just talk about me videos.
Not to say if I ever catch Topsy chattering in the window, I might create a video, but I haven't been able to yet. I would like to have my blog posts not only be about my fun cat videos, but cat stuff in general.
Update; Haven't gotten Topsy on video chattering yet, but I did create this video last night. I am still determined to get video of Topsy chattering someday, but this video will have to do for now.
As always, I hope everyone is doing well, and if you have a purrfect playmate, you are taking care of it, by feeding it a healthy diet, so it doesn't want to eat bird, or any other wild animal for that matter.
