3 Cat Training Tips

In this article I’ll be discussing 3 training tips for cats. Many believe cats can’t be trained, but I am not one of them. Yes they are different than dogs, but like many other animals can be trained.

So is training cats really possible? Well if you google it, like any thing else, you’ll find results. 3 billion results including articles books etc. In fact after you read this article, I suggest you look further into training cats and read a book like Training Your Cat.

So here are my 3 cat training tips:

Protect Your Hands: Are you tired of your cat biting your hands, even if it might seem playful, it always leaves a mark. Well train your cat to be gentle with your hands. Get some treat paste put it on your hand, and present it to your cat. As your cat begins to lick the paste remind it to be gentle, and if it starts to nibble slowly move your hand away.

No way you get a cat to sit: Like a dog, it is a reward base method. First find your cat sitting, reward it with a treat, and say sit. Now try to simulate that action by using a pointing signal or wand and say sit. Once your cat sits reward it with a treat. Experts suggest also using a clicker in this method, clicking every time the cat sits.

Oh God not the Carrier: Are two cats always give us problems with this, our boy more so than our girl. Our Philly is gone now, but when he was around, he would always hide if he heard the carrier come out. Experts say if you have a problem with this, you should pull out the carrier long before you go. Use it as a feeding station or a place to reward your cat with treats. Once again if you cat enters the carrier use a clicker say in the box and reward the action.

Bonus Tip:  This article was originally published on Medium, but this bonus tip is exclusively for this site only.  Another issue we are having is our Topsy isn't eating her wet food.    Experts say to mix it with your dry food, and see how your cat reacts.  If it is well received continue with that method and increase the ratio of wet food, until it is all wet food. 

Now these are just a few tips I pulled from Googling cat training. I can say we have pulled the carrier out well ahead of time, just so we wouldn’t be late to a vet appointment.

I am interested in these methods and will give them a try, at least the sitting one and maybe the carrier with our girl. I don’t have a problem with my cat biting. Have any of you tried any of these methods? Have you found them to be successful? Or is it true, cats can’t be trained.
